Brighton is a seaside resort in the unitary authority area of Brighton and Hove, in East Sussex, England, 47 miles (76 km) south of London. Archaeological evidence of settlement in the area dates back to the Bronze Age, Roman and Anglo-Saxon periods. The ancient settlement of "Brighthelmstone" was documented in the Domesday Book (1086). The town's importance grew in the Middle Ages as the Old Town developed, but it languished in the early modern period, affected by foreign attacks, storms, a suffering economy and a declining population. Brighton began to attract more visitors following improved road transport to London and becoming a boarding point for boats travelling to France. The town also developed in popularity as a health resort for sea bathing as a purported cure for illnesses.

Visit Brighton for music, theater, and performance, literature, bookshops, and universities, archaeology and older urban layers. The value of Brighton is clearest when museums, streets, religious buildings, markets, food, and nearby landscape are read together. A good itinerary should stay selective. Let one institution, district, or landscape edge organize the day in Brighton, then keep the supporting stops close. For Brighton, this usually reveals more than adding one more distant sight. For Brighton, nearby landscapes and day trips should explain the city, not turn the itinerary into transit work.
Do not visit Brighton expecting every useful stop to be close together or easy to improvise. In Brighton, a good plan starts with the constraints, not with the number of sights. For Brighton, check the practical conditions first, then decide whether walking, transit, or a taxi makes sense for each move. If the main interest is one nearby site, it may be better to treat Brighton as a base rather than the whole destination.
June through August are the months when heat and daylight most affect a visit to Brighton. For Brighton, mild conditions help walking, though weather can still shift during the day. A warm day in Brighton should have phases: outdoor streets, indoor collections or churches, then a slower evening. Do not build Brighton around a long route until the main hours are confirmed.
December through February are the cooler or wetter period in Brighton. Winter in Brighton asks for an interior-led plan rather than a wide outdoor route. Think of this period in Brighton as a planning question: what can still be walked, entered, and reached comfortably? In Brighton, this season can work well for museums, churches, galleries, theaters, bookshops, cafes, and ordinary neighborhood life. Keep Brighton compact in this season: fewer outdoor sections, better hour checks, and practical rides when conditions make transit awkward.
