Delft is the quiet canal town wedged between Rotterdam and The Hague, the place that gave the world Vermeer and the blue-and-white pottery. The historic center is small, flat, and linked to both larger cities by frequent trains.

Planning brief

Planning Delft

Delft is the small canal city between Rotterdam and The Hague, the town that gave the world Vermeer and a particular shade of blue pottery. The historic center is compact and walkable, with frequent trains on the main Randstad rail spine.

Easy by Randstad rail

Delft sits one short train hop from The Hague and Rotterdam and about an hour from Amsterdam. The Markt and churches sit together in the compact center. Royal Delft and the canal routes extend south from it.

The Markt and two churches

The central square is framed by the Stadhuis on one end and the Nieuwe Kerk on the other, with the leaning Oude Kerk a few canals away. The Nieuwe Kerk holds the tomb of William of Orange.

Vermeer and the blue pottery

Delft is Vermeer's town, though he left no house to visit. The Vermeer Centrum tells the story. Royal Delft, the last of the 17th-century potteries, is the place to see the blue-and-white made.

It is a walking town

The center is small, flat, and laced with canals. Leave the car, skip the tram, and just walk. The town reveals itself one bridge at a time.

Getting in

Delft sits on the main rail spine of the Randstad, which makes it trivially reachable. From The Hague it is about 10 minutes by train, from Rotterdam about 12, and from Amsterdam Centraal about an hour. Trains run every few minutes. The fare runs on OVpay, the contactless tap-in tap-out system, so you do not need a paper ticket.

Delft station is a short walk from the historic center. Inside the town you do not need transport at all. The center is small and flat, the streets are half canal, and walking is the point. Hotels cluster around the Markt and station if Delft is your base.

The Markt and the two churches

The Markt is the long central square and the obvious orientation point. The Stadhuis, the Renaissance city hall, closes one end. The Nieuwe Kerk closes the other, a tall Gothic church whose tower is the second-highest in the Netherlands and climbable for the view across the low country. Inside is the mausoleum of William of Orange, the founding figure of the Dutch state, which makes the church the burial place of the House of Orange-Nassau to this day.

A few canals west, the Oude Kerk is the older church, instantly recognizable for its visibly leaning brick tower. Vermeer is buried here, in a town that otherwise left him almost no physical trace.

For a smaller curiosity, the Smallest House of Delft is exactly what the name says, a sled-narrow facade wedged into the streetscape and a quick photo stop on the way between churches.

Delftware and Vermeer

Delft is Vermeer's town, but it is an unusual literary-pilgrimage destination because there is no Vermeer house to visit and no Vermeer painting to see in the city. He worked here, painted his small luminous interiors here, and died here in 1675. The major paintings hang elsewhere, above all the Mauritshuis in The Hague, ten minutes away, which holds Girl with a Pearl Earring. The Vermeer Centrum in Delft is an interpretation center that walks through his life and technique rather than a collection of originals. Treat it as context, not as the paintings.

The other Delft is the pottery. Royal Delft, founded as De Porceleyne Fles in 1653, is the last of the original 17th-century Delftware factories still operating. The site runs a museum and a working studio where you can watch the blue-and-white hand-painted, which is the more memorable half of the visit.

Where to eat

Delft eats casually. HANNO is the relaxed all-day grand café for a long lunch or a coffee between churches. Ramen Nikkou is the small ramen counter for a fast, warming bowl on a cold canal day.

For a walk that is not a sight, the Abtswoudse Bos is the woodland park on the southern edge of town, threaded by the Bosdierenpad nature trail. It is the green half-hour if the canals and churches have been enough.

Festivals and big annual events

Delft's calendar is small and quiet, with a couple of windows that can shape dates.

Event When What it changes
King's Day (Koningsdag) April 27 The national holiday lands with extra weight here, since Delft is the burial city of the House of Orange. Street markets and music along the canals, the town in orange
Delft Chamber Music Festival Late July to early August A well-regarded classical festival staged in the churches and historic halls. The acoustically serious side of the Delft year
Lichtjesavond (Evening of Lights) A mid-December evening Candles and lights fill the Markt and the canalside for one winter evening, with a market and music. The most atmospheric night to be in town
Delft Blue weekends and craft markets Scattered across the year Pottery and craft markets that lean on the city's Delftware identity. Small-scale, local-first

None of these reshape the town the way a major-city festival does. Delft is a year-round day trip. The one window to plan around is Lichtjesavond in December, if a candle-lit canal evening is the trip you want.

Quick answers

How do I get to Delft?
Delft sits on the main rail line through the Randstad. From The Hague it is about 10 minutes by train, from Rotterdam about 12 minutes, and from Amsterdam Centraal about 1 hour. Trains run every few minutes and the fare is on OVpay, tapped at the gate. Delft station is a short walk from the historic center.
Can I see Vermeer paintings in Delft?
Not in Delft itself. Vermeer worked and died in Delft but the major paintings hang elsewhere, above all the Mauritshuis in The Hague, which is 10 minutes away by train and holds Girl with a Pearl Earring. The Vermeer Centrum in Delft is an interpretation center, not a collection of originals.
What is Delftware?
Delftware is the tin-glazed blue-and-white earthenware that Delft potteries produced from the 17th century, originally imitating imported Chinese porcelain. Royal Delft (De Koninklijke Porceleyne Fles), founded in 1653, is the last of the original factories still operating and runs a museum and a working painting studio.
