Why visit
October to April brings tolerable temperatures and the Citadel at its best. The covered Qaysari Bazaar at the citadel's foot, the textile museum, and the open-air Çay (tea) houses give a vivid sense of Kurdish urban life, unhurried, hospitable, and proud. Day trips reach the gorges of Rawanduz, the spring waterfalls of Bekhal and Gali Ali Beg, and the ancient hill town of Lalish, holiest site of the Yezidi faith.
When to avoid
Check current government travel advisories before booking, Iraqi Kurdistan is usually calmer than the rest of Iraq but the security situation can shift quickly, especially near the Syrian and Iranian borders. July to August temperatures regularly top 43°C. A separate Kurdistan Region visa-on-arrival applies at Erbil airport for many nationalities. Don't assume a federal Iraqi visa works.
