Why visit

Gdynia is Poland's seaside city of clean lines, ship masts, and Modernist architecture, a different mood from Gdańsk's Hanseatic brick. Tour the moored ORP Błyskawica destroyer and the Dar Pomorza training tall ship at the southern pier, walk the Kamienna Góra clifftop for Baltic views, and visit the Emigration Museum (a moving history of Polish departure from this very port). Use as base for the Hel Peninsula day trip. Best May through September.

When to avoid

Gdynia lacks the medieval old town magic of Gdańsk, if you're prioritizing one Tricity stop on a short trip, choose Gdańsk. The city center thins out quickly. Sightseeing focuses on the southern pier and waterfront. Winter sea winds are bitter, the exposed coast feels colder than Gdańsk inland. The summer Open'er Festival (early July) books out the city.

About Gdynia

Gdynia is a city in northern Poland and a seaport on the Baltic Sea coast. With a population of ca. 239,000, it is the 12th-largest city in Poland and the second-largest in the Pomeranian Voivodeship after Gdańsk. Gdynia is part of a conurbation with the spa town of Sopot, the city of Gdańsk, and suburban communities, which together form a metropolitan area called the Tricity (Trójmiasto) with around one million inhabitants.
