Viet Nam, Asia
HCMC is the base for two day trips, plus the Mekong Delta as a separate overnight rather than a day excursion. The famous trip-tour-bus loop misleads here, the better Mekong is a 1- or 2-night stretch.
| Where | Getting there | Why go |
|---|---|---|
| Cu Chi Tunnels | About 1 hr 30 each way by van tour | The Viet Cong tunnel network from the war, with crawl-through sections, weapons demonstrations, and a working booby-trap display. Most tours run via Ben Dinh (less crowded) rather than Ben Duoc. Half-day to full-day. Wear clothes you can crawl in. |
| Vung Tau | About 2 hr each way by hydrofoil or car | The beach town on the South China Sea, with the giant Christ of Vung Tau statue (the largest in Asia). Long day or 1-night stretch. Not the best Vietnam beach but the closest to HCMC. |
| Mekong Delta (Cai Be, Can Tho) | About 3 hr each way, best as 1 or 2 nights | The river-life experience, with the floating markets at dawn, the homestay nights on the river, and the rice-noodle workshops. Day trips that promise "Mekong from HCMC" mostly land at My Tho, which is the least interesting option. Real Mekong needs an overnight. |
