Why visit
The Spodek arena (a flying-saucer 1971 icon), the Silesian Museum built into a former coal mine, and the NOSPR concert hall (one of Europe's best acoustically) form a striking Strefa Kultury (Culture Zone). Nikiszowiec, a preserved 1908 miners' housing estate of red-brick courtyards, is a short tram ride east. The OFF Festival (early August) is Poland's best alternative-music event.
When to avoid
Winter (November to February) is grim, cold, wet, and historically among Europe's worst air quality due to coal heating, though much improved. Night trains from western Poland sometimes attract drunk football crowds. Coal mining has caused subsidence in some neighborhoods. Stick to the center. In Katowice, keep the route local once the day begins. For Katowice, a nearby substitute often beats a long transfer to a weaker stop.
