Peru, South America
Lima sits at the start of a wider Peru trip rather than at the center of a day-trip catalogue, but a handful of short excursions and the obvious onward stretches are worth knowing about.
| Where | Getting there | Why go |
|---|---|---|
| Pachacamac | About 1 hr each way by car or tour | The pre-Inca archaeological site 40 km south of Lima, a complex of adobe pyramids and temples from the Lima, Wari, and Inca cultures. Half-day with a guided tour. Quieter than Cuzco-side sites. |
| Paracas and the Ballestas Islands | About 3 hr 30 each way, best as 1 night | The "poor man's Galapagos" islands off the desert coast, with sea lions, penguins, and coastal birds. The Paracas Reserve adds the candelabra geoglyph and the desert-meets-Pacific landscapes. |
| Caral | About 3 hr each way | One of the oldest cities in the Americas, dating to about 3000 BCE. UNESCO-listed pyramid complex. Long day, real depth for archaeology travelers. |
| Cuzco and Machu Picchu | About 1 hr 30 by flight to Cuzco, then onward | Not a Lima day trip but the natural onward leg. Most travelers route Lima -> Cuzco -> Sacred Valley -> Machu Picchu as the wider Peru itinerary. |
