Why visit
The Teatro Sauto, one of the finest 19th-century theaters in the Caribbean, hosts major performances. Las Cuevas de Bellamar (4 km outside town) are striking crystalline caves discovered in 1861. The Ediciones Vigia bookshop hand-makes limited-edition books from recycled materials. A 30-minute drive reaches Varadero's white-sand beaches without the resort crowds. The rumba scene in Matanzas remains the most authentic in Cuba, head to Plaza de la Vigia or any neighborhood patio on a Saturday night.
When to avoid
August 2022 saw a catastrophic oil-depot fire that killed 16 and damaged the city's energy infrastructure. Ongoing power outages and shortages affect daily life. Cuba is in deep economic crisis, carry US dollars or euros, internet is limited and expensive, and tourist services are degraded. Hurricane season (June to November) brings real risk. Don't book through unofficial taxis at night.
