Why visit
For travelers focused on Mesopotamian history, Mosul is unmatched, the ruins of Nineveh, the Mosul Museum (heavily damaged then partially restored), and the historic Christian quarters of Bartella and Qaraqosh in the Nineveh Plains tell stories spanning 4,000 years. Local Mosuli cuisine, kubba mosuliyeh (semolina dumplings stuffed with meat), masgouf grilled fish from the Tigris, is among Iraq's finest. Most visitors combine Mosul with Erbil (Kurdish capital, 90 minutes east) for a wider Iraqi-Kurdistan trip.
When to avoid
Most Western governments still strongly advise against travel to Iraq, ISIS sleeper cells, kidnapping risk, sectarian tensions, and unexploded ordnance remain serious concerns. Independent travel is unwise. Use a vetted local guide and arrange security clearance in advance. Photography of military, government, and religious-disputed sites can lead to detention.
