Why visit
Nouadhibou is for serious off-grid travelers. Visit the austere ship graveyard at the bay's edge, where rusting trawlers and freighters create a post-apocalyptic photo backdrop. The Cap Blanc nature reserve protects one of the last colonies of Mediterranean monk seals (one of the world's rarest mammals). Watch the iron-ore train from Zouérate, the world's longest at 2.5 km, roll into port and join hardy souls who ride atop the open ore cars across the Sahara. The fish market at dawn is colorful and chaotic. Use Nouadhibou as a launch for the Banc d'Arguin national park's bird sanctuaries.
When to avoid
Mauritania carries serious travel advisories due to terrorism, kidnapping risk, and political instability, check current guidance before traveling. The Western Sahara border region requires permits and military escorts. Don't approach without official guidance. Photography of police, military, the port, and government buildings can lead to arrest. Tap water is unsafe, stick to bottled. Cards barely work. Bring cash. The local Hassaniya Arabic is challenging and English is essentially absent. French is critical. Heat in summer is brutal. Avoid traveling overland alone.
