Why visit
Nouakchott is for really intrepid travelers. The Port de Pêche fish market at sunset, where wooden pirogues are hauled bodily up the beach by men chanting in Hassaniya, is one of the great spectacles of West Africa. Visit the Mauritanian National Museum for ancient manuscripts and Saharan archaeology. The Marche Capitale and the gold-and-silver souk show the country's caravan trade roots. Use Nouakchott as a base for trips to the dunes around Terjit oasis, the prehistoric rock art at Tichitt, or the ancient libraries of Chinguetti deep in the Sahara.
When to avoid
Mauritania carries serious travel advisories, terrorism, kidnapping, and political instability are practical risks. Check current guidance carefully. Travel outside Nouakchott often requires armed escorts or military permits. Photography of police, military, and government buildings can lead to arrest. Tap water is unsafe. Mosquito-borne illness circulates. Cards barely work. Bring cash. Single women travelers face significant harassment. Many roads outside the city are unpaved tracks. 4WD essential. Don't travel overland after dark. Check FCDO/State Department alerts before booking.
