Why visit
Novo Mesto is one of Slovenia's most overlooked small cities. Walk the Glavni trg main square ringed by colored Renaissance and Baroque facades, then up to the Chapter Church with its medieval defensive walls. Cross to the Krka riverside promenade for views of the curving river hugging the old town. The Dolenjski Museum holds remarkable Iron Age helmets and finds from the surrounding Hallstatt-era burial mounds. Use Novo Mesto as a base for the Cviček wine region (light red Slovenian wine), Žiužemberk Castle, and the thermal spas at Šmarješke and Dolenjske Toplice. Easy day-trip from Ljubljana.
When to avoid
The Krka can flood after heavy rain, occasionally damaging riverside paths. Sundays many shops close. The industrial outskirts (Krka pharmaceuticals and Renault) are unattractive, stick to the historic center. Public transport to surrounding wine villages is limited. A rental car helps. Restaurants in the old town can be tourist-priced. Better value lies just outside. Include the Cviček wine, it's an acquired taste (light, sour, low-alcohol) but defines the region. Some cafes don't accept cards, keep small euros handy.
