Why visit
Poznań rewards travelers seeking authentic central Poland with strong heritage and good food, the Old Market Square, the Royal Castle, the Imperial Castle (built for Kaiser Wilhelm II), the Lake Malta recreational area, and the famous Poznań St. Martin's croissants (rogale świętomarcińskie, a UNESCO-protected pastry). Late spring (May to June) and early autumn (September) are best. Use Poznań as a stop between Berlin and Warsaw (each about 3 hours by train) or for the wider Wielkopolska region.
When to avoid
Trade-fair weeks (varying schedule, mostly spring and autumn) drive hotel prices through the roof. The Old Town can get rowdy with stag parties on weekend nights. Some neighborhoods (Wilda, parts of Jeżyce) have a rougher edge. Tap water is usually safe but locals stick to filtered. Driving in the historic center is restricted. Park outside and use trams.
