Why visit
Rzeszów is one of Poland's most underrated cities and the gateway to the Bieszczady Mountains. Wander the elegant pedestrianized Market Square (Rynek) ringed by colorful merchant houses. Tour the Lubomirski Castle and the Bernardine Monastery. Explore the Rzeszów Underground Tourist Route through medieval cellars beneath the Old Town. The Ethnographic Park in Sanok 60 km south is one of Europe's largest open-air museums of wooden architecture. Use Rzeszów as a base for the Bieszczady National Park (wolves, lynx, brown bears, wild horses), the wooden tserkva churches of the Carpathians (UNESCO), and the Lûów-Polish-Ruthenian heritage region.
When to avoid
Rzeszów-Jasionka airport's role as the main NATO logistics hub for Ukraine has occasional security implications, don't photograph military hardware or transport. The Polish-Ukrainian border at Korczowa-Krakovets and Medyka-Shehyni has had long delays for cars and bus passengers since 2022. Sundays see most shops shuttered. The Bieszczady Mountains have wolves and brown bears, hike with food properly stored. Skip the city in deep January when smog from coal heating can be severe. Don't expect English fluency outside hotels and tech firms.
