Why visit

The Castillo de San Pedro de la Roca (Castillo del Morro), UNESCO World Heritage, guards the harbor entrance with sweeping Caribbean views. Parque Céspedes is the colonial heart, ringed by the Cathedral, the Casa de Diego Velázquez (oldest house in the Americas, 1516), and the Hotel Casa Granda. Casa de la Trova nightly ignites with live son and trova. The Cuartel Moncada (now a museum) bears the bullet holes from 1953. Santiago Carnival in late July is wilder and more African than Havana's. The Sierra Maestra mountains hosted the rebel base. Treks into Pico Turquino are possible.

When to avoid

Cuba's ongoing economic crisis means shortages of food, fuel, and medicines are real, plan accordingly and bring sufficient cash (USD or EUR). ATMs often don't work for foreign cards. Hurricane risk peaks August to October, and Santiago has been hit hard repeatedly. Crime is usually low but petty theft and unwanted attention happen, standard urban precautions. Internet access is limited and metered. Photography of military installations is forbidden. Don't expect Western-style hotels or services consistently.
