Georgia, Europe
Tbilisi is the base for two distinct day-trip catalogues. The cultural-historical loop (Mtskheta, Uplistsikhe, Gori) and the Kakheti wine country east of the city. Both fit in single days from a Tbilisi base, the wine country also makes a strong overnight.
| Where | Getting there | Why go |
|---|---|---|
| Mtskheta | About 30 min by car or marshrutka | The ancient royal capital of Georgia, UNESCO-listed, with the Svetitskhoveli Cathedral and the hilltop Jvari Monastery. Half-day, walkable once you're there. |
| Kakheti wine country (Telavi, Sighnaghi) | About 1 hr 30 to 2 hr each way | Georgia's qvevri wine region, with family wineries, the medieval hilltop town of Sighnaghi, and the Bodbe Monastery. A long day or a 1-night stretch. Rtveli (the September-October grape harvest) is the season. |
| Stepantsminda and Mount Kazbegi | About 3 hr each way, best as 1 night | The Caucasus mountain town on the Russian border, with the Gergeti Trinity Church framed by Mt Kazbegi. A long day or much better as a 1-night stretch. |
| Uplistsikhe and Gori | About 1 hr 30 each way | The cave city of Uplistsikhe, carved out of rock starting in the Bronze Age, paired with Gori (Stalin's birthplace, with the museum that is its own travel decision). |
| David Gareja Monastery | About 2 hr each way | The 6th-century cave monastery complex on the Azerbaijan border. Off the standard circuit and worth the drive for the Caucasus-desert landscape. |
