Why visit
Wander the cobbled old town, anchored by the colossal Gothic Old Town Hall (now a museum) and the surviving medieval city walls, gates, and Leaning Tower. Visit the Copernicus House Museum where the astronomer was born, and the planetarium named for him. The Gingerbread Museum lets you bake your own piernik. The Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist holds Copernicus's baptismal font. Walk the riverside promenade for the well known view of red-brick walls reflected in the Vistula. Sample katarzynka (heart-shaped gingerbread) and Polish craft beer at the local breweries.
When to avoid
Winters are bitter (lows near -6°C with snow and biting Vistula wind) and short days mean limited sightseeing time. Summer brings tour-bus crowds in the small old town. Driving in the historic center is restricted. Park outside and walk. Some museums close on Mondays. Pickpockets occasionally work the train station and main square. ATMs and cards work well. Tip 10 to 15% in restaurants.
