Why visit
Ur belongs in the atlas because it is one of the great ancient-city names, tied to archaeology, early urban history, and the southern Iraq landscape around the marshes. This is a research and heritage record first. It should not read like ordinary trip advice.
When to avoid
Do not treat Ur as a current travel recommendation. In July 2026, the U.S. State Department listed Iraq at Level 4, Do Not Travel, citing terrorism, kidnapping, armed conflict, civil unrest, and limited U.S. Emergency support. Keep it as long-term heritage context unless the security environment changes dramatically.
