Augsburg, a Roman city an hour from Munich

Augsburg is one of Germany's oldest cities, founded as a Roman camp and later the seat of the Fugger banking family. It sits on the Munich to Stuttgart rail line, about 40 minutes west of Munich, with frequent regional connections on a wider Bavaria route. This list is short: where I stayed and where I ate.

    Where I stayed

I stayed at Holiday Inn Express Augsburg, a straightforward IHG property within walking distance of the station and the old town. The useful part is the easy rail logistics and a slow walk through the historic core.

    The old town and waterworks

Augsburg's center has more texture than the hotel-and-train-stop version suggests. The Fuggerei is the famous social-housing complex, the Augsburg Cathedral anchors the older ecclesiastical side of town, and the Water Management System of Augsburg is the bigger UNESCO story running through the city.

Cobblestone lane near the Red Gate waterworks in Augsburg
The Red Gate area is the part of Augsburg where the waterworks story feels most tangible: old lanes, gates, channels, and the practical machinery of the city still close together.

The Aqueduct at the Red Gate and Vogeltor make the best walkable version of that. It is not the flashiest Bavarian stop, but it is a good one if you like infrastructure history, brick, water, and old-city edges.

    Where I ate

Landbäckerei IHLE is a regional Bavarian bakery chain, fine for a quick breakfast or a pastry to walk with, and Razz-Fazz Fingerfood is a small-plates spot for a lighter dinner.

    Käsespätzle at Kälberhalle in Augsburg
Kälberhalle is the stronger sit-down food pin: Bavarian comfort food in a converted market-hall setting, and enough of a meal to make the overnight feel like part of the trip.

Kälberhalle is the more useful meal to plan around if you have time for one proper sit-down stop. It is still casual, but it has more sense of place than a quick station-area bite.
