Playa del Carmen is a resort city along the Caribbean Sea in the southeastern state of Quintana Roo, Mexico. It is part of the municipality of Solidaridad. As of 2020, the city's population was just over 300,000, a small yet thriving portion of whom are immigrants.

Playa del Carmen grew from a sleepy Cozumel ferry stop into a full Yucatán resort town, strung along the Quinta Avenida pedestrian strip with white Caribbean sand at its edge. The cenotes and Mayan ruins are the depth. Tulum, Cozumel, and the cenotes require separate transport from Quinta Avenida.
Playa del Carmen Cancún International (CUN) is reached primarily through Cancún International (CUN), 65 km north. The Tulum airport (TQO) opened in 2023 as a closer alternative but with much less international service.

Playa's two main timing warnings are Christmas to New Year and March spring break. Sargassum also matters from spring into summer.

For practical errands on a longer stay, Lavanderia Garcia is the laundry pick. Reasonable prices and a fast turnaround.
Yucatán food has its own side inside Mexican cooking: cochinita pibil (slow-roasted pork in achiote and citrus), poc chuc, panuchos, the habanero-and-citrus salsas. Playa's restaurant scene mixes these traditional roots with the international expat-driven rotation. The picks below cover both.
