Arc de Triomf was built as the main entrance to Barcelona’s 1888 Universal Exposition. Josep Vilaseca designed it in red brick with neo-Mudéjar details instead of the stone and marble used for most triumphal arches. The main frieze shows Barcelona welcoming the participating nations, while the side reliefs represent agriculture, industry, commerce, and art.
