About
Buda Castle occupies the southern end of Castle Hill, with long palace wings, courtyards, terraces and views across the Danube. King Béla IV began a royal castle here after the Mongol invasion of 1241-42, and Buda later became the center of the Hungarian court. Matthias Corvinus developed it into a Renaissance artistic center. Ottoman rule, Habsburg rebuilding, World War II damage and postwar reconstruction account for the different layers visible today.
The palace complex now houses the Hungarian National Gallery, Budapest History Museum and National Széchényi Library. The outdoor courtyards are free, while each institution sets its own tickets and hours. Reconstruction work can change pedestrian routes through the district.
