Visited 2021Castel Sant'Angelo was kind of boring. The history is more interesting than the museum visit itself.

Castel Sant'Angelo began as Emperor Hadrian's mausoleum in the second century. Rome later absorbed the circular structure into its defenses. Popes used it as a fortified residence, prison and refuge, and the Passetto di Borgo connected it to the Vatican.
The museum route climbs through the Roman core into later courtyards, papal rooms and terraces. The building became a national museum in 1925.
