Friedensengel Munich
Munich, Germany
Mike's review
The Friedensengel is a late-19th-century peace monument above the Isar. It commemorates 25 years of peace after the Franco-Prussian War of 1870 and 1871. The gilded figure is Nike, set on a tall column above a temple-like base.
Stand on the terrace and look down Prinzregentenstrasse. The boulevard, fountain, river, and park all line up around the monument. Munich used the site to frame a peace monument as part of the street, not as an isolated statue.
