About
Prague’s UNESCO-listed historic center spans Old Town, New Town, Malá Strana and Hradčany on both sides of the Vltava. Medieval street patterns survive alongside Romanesque churches, Gothic towers, Baroque palaces and early modern buildings. Much of the visible city took shape between the eleventh and eighteenth centuries without the large-scale clearance that changed many European capitals.
Charles IV’s fourteenth-century building program left the strongest group of landmarks, including Charles Bridge, Prague Castle and the New Town plan. The historic center is a living district with free public streets and squares. Churches, towers, museums and palace interiors keep their own tickets and hours.
