The UNESCO property covers Rome's historic center within the widest seventeenth-century walls, several Holy See properties with extraterritorial status and the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls. It was inscribed in 1980 and expanded in 1990.
The property is a larger urban area containing the Forum, Colosseum, Pantheon, papal churches, Renaissance palaces, Baroque squares and many ordinary streets built over earlier structures. Individual museums and archaeological sites keep their own hours and charge separately.
