Historical Complex of Split with the Palace of Diocletian

This is the part of Split that made the city feel layered instead of merely pretty. The old palace is still a working piece of town: apartments, cafes, church doors, stone passages, courtyards, tourists, and Roman walls all folded into the same blocks.

The history has a sharp edge. Diocletian built this as an imperial palace, and he was also the emperor tied to some of the harshest persecution of Christians. Then the city kept living inside the shell he left behind. The old imperial and temple landscape became Christian space in places, with the mausoleum becoming the cathedral and the Temple of Jupiter becoming a baptistery. That contradiction is what makes the complex worth slowing down for: Rome, empire, reuse, faith, and ordinary city life all occupying the same stone.
