Kampa

Kampa is a Vltava island in Malá Strana, separated from the neighborhood by the artificial Čertovka channel. The channel was built as a millrace, and the surviving Grand Priory Mill wheel is visible from the small bridge near Lennon Wall. The southern half is an open park, while the northern end narrows into streets and houses beneath Charles Bridge.

The island grew through river deposits and later fill, including rubble from the 1541 fire in Malá Strana and Hradčany. Mills and their gardens occupied the land before aristocratic gardens replaced them. Walls between those gardens came down in the 1950s, creating the 2.65-hectare public park visible today.
