Visited 2015Maria Theresa died in 1780, but this monument was unveiled in 1888. It belongs to the Ringstrasse building boom, more than a century after the Vienna she ruled. The two museums on either side were built at the same time, and the square formed part of the unfinished Imperial Forum planned around the Hofburg.
Maria Theresa sits above her advisers and generals, with four mounted commanders at the corners. The monument is the center point for this part of Vienna. The Hofburg is across the Ring to the east, the MuseumsQuartier is to the west, and the Art History and Natural History museums face each other on either side.
