Visited 2015Heldenplatz was meant to be the center of a much larger imperial forum. The plan was never completed, which is why the square has the Neue Burg on one side and remains open toward the Ringstrasse on the other.
The two equestrian monuments are the main markers. Archduke Charles is shown on a rearing horse in the middle of the square. Prince Eugene faces him closer to the palace. Cross here when walking from the Hofburg courtyards to the museums around Maria-Theresien-Platz. It is a public square rather than a timed attraction, and the history is easier to read once you know you are standing inside an unfinished piece of the nineteenth-century Hofburg expansion.
