Archaeological Site Inside Monastiraki Metro Station

Monastiraki station contains an archaeological display beside the metro platforms. Excavation for Line 3 exposed the bed and banks of the Eridanos River, which was covered in antiquity as Athens expanded. About 300 square meters of the river channel remain visible inside the station, with another view into the excavation from the square.

The original station building opened in 1895 for the surface railway. It was restored and expanded when Line 3 reached Monastiraki in 2003. The display is part of a working interchange between Lines 1 and 3, so access follows station operations rather than separate museum hours.
