National Archaeological Museum is the big Athens museum for objects from across Greece. It began in the early Greek state and now holds major prehistoric, Cycladic, Mycenaean, classical, and Roman collections in a 19th-century neoclassical building.
Use it when you want the wider Greek timeline. The Acropolis Museum explains one hill in depth. This museum lets you compare sculpture, bronze work, pottery, jewelry, and funerary material from many regions. It is best with time and energy, because the collection is large.

The National Archaeological Museum fills a late-nineteenth-century neoclassical building north of central Athens. More than 11,000 exhibits cover Greek material from prehistory through late antiquity. Major sections include Mycenaean and Cycladic finds, sculpture, bronze work, pottery, Egyptian antiquities, and Cypriot antiquities.
The Mycenaean galleries hold gold from the royal graves, while the bronze collection includes the Antikythera Mechanism and large original statues recovered from the sea. Wall paintings from prehistoric Thera provide a different scale and color from the marble galleries. The collection is extensive, so a short visit works better with one or two sections chosen in advance. The museum has its own ticket and is not part of the Acropolis archaeological sites.
