Use Nuremberg's walls for orientation around the old city. About 3.5 kilometers of the original five remain, with gates, towers, moat sections, and the castle integrated into the system. The fortifications were largely complete by the mid-15th century and later adapted for artillery.
Walk a stretch near the castle or along the moat. You can see why a defended city needed gates, towers, ditches, and sightlines. The walls give Nuremberg shape before the individual sights start to blur.
