Biotrén Biotrén Line 1

Biotrén Line 1 runs from Mercado de Talcahuano through industrial Hualpén and central Concepción, then follows the Biobío valley through Chiguayante to Hualqui.

Biotrén opened in 1999, and Line 1 keeps the original metropolitan corridor between Talcahuano, Concepción, and Hualqui. The service was rebuilt and expanded during the following decade.

Concepción is the transfer for Line 2 to Coronel. The regional Laja train also shares the corridor, but its timetable and destination are separate from Biotrén.

The northern section is useful for Talcahuano and Las Higueras. South of Concepción, the line becomes a narrow suburban corridor with closely spaced stops through Chiguayante.

Weekday peak service is the strongest. Hualqui trains can be less frequent than the inner section, so confirm the destination before boarding.

Modern electric multiple units introduced in 2021 have climate control, passenger information screens, security cameras, and space for passengers with reduced mobility. They are commuter trains with substantial standing room, and the Concepción section can be crowded at peak hours.

Use EFE Sur's current electronic fare medium. Larger stations have more complete sales and assistance facilities than the neighborhood platforms.

Most stops are at grade. Platform access ranges from ramps at larger stations to simpler approaches at neighborhood stops. Use formal railway crossings because the tracks carry regional and freight trains as well as Biotrén.
