San Martín Line San Martín: Retiro–Doctor Cabred

The San Martín Retiro to Doctor Cabred line connects central Buenos Aires with Palermo, Villa del Parque, Caseros, Hurlingham, José C. Paz, Pilar, and the outer terminal at Doctor Cabred. It is one long diesel corridor rather than a set of separately branded branches.

The route opened in the late nineteenth century as the Buenos Aires and Pacific Railway's line toward western Argentina. It took the San Martín name after nationalization in 1948. Retiro's San Martín terminal remains separate from the neighboring Mitre and Belgrano Norte concourses.

Use SUBE for the fare and check whether a departure runs to Pilar or continues to Doctor Cabred. Outer service is less frequent, and engineering work can shorten the operating route. Palermo connects with Subte Line D at a nearby station, but the transfer involves leaving the railway.

Diesel locomotives pull air-conditioned passenger coaches across the full line. Crowding is heavy on the inner section and the locomotive-hauled ride feels different from Buenos Aires' electric commuter trains. Raised platforms have improved boarding, but wheelchair access, ramps, and platform gaps still vary by station.
