Mike’s notes
Cologne's Stadtbahn is the classic German in-between system: underground in the dense parts, tramlike on the surface, and regional-feeling when it stretches toward Bonn.
For a short Cologne visit, you mostly walk the cathedral/old-town/Rhine core and use the Stadtbahn for neighborhoods, hotels outside the center, or the Bonn direction. It is not a metro in the Paris sense, and that is the point.
Ticketing sits in the VRS/KVB world. If you are on a longer German trip, the Deutschlandticket may cover the local-transport shape, otherwise use the app or machines.
