Düsseldorf's rail network is practical more than romantic: Stadtbahn tunnels in the central parts, trams on the surface, and regional logic tying the city into the Rhine-Ruhr.
Use it for the Hauptbahnhof, Altstadt/Rhine approaches, Messe/event trips, and hotel locations outside the small walking core. The city center itself is easy on foot once you are there.
Ticketing is Rheinbahn/VRR logic. The app is the easiest short-stay answer. The Deutschlandticket is the broader German-trip answer.
