Line 1 is the practical first piece of the Ho Chi Minh City Metro: Ben Thanh to Suoi Tien by way of Opera House, Ba Son, Thao Dien, Thu Duc, Hi-Tech Park, and National University. It is not a complete citywide system yet, but it is already a real visitor route.

The central section is the part most tourists will notice first. Ben Thanh puts the metro next to the market and the future transfer hub. Opera House is the District 1 cultural core. Ba Son is useful for the riverfront and the newer city-building around the old shipyard area. After that, the line runs elevated toward the east, which is where it starts feeling less like a downtown shuttle and more like the first rail spine of a much bigger city.

For a visitor, the line is most useful when your day touches Thao Dien, Thu Duc, or Suoi Tien, or when you simply want to cross the city without sitting in motorbike and car traffic. I would still use Grab for short door-to-door hops, late nights, and anything the line does not actually serve. But if Line 1 is close to both ends, take the train. It is new, cool, legible, and much less draining than another hot traffic crawl.
