Lines
Quick facts
- Operator
- İzmir Metro operates the city's metro line.
- Network type
- A single metro line running from Narlıdere/Fahrettin Altay through Konak, Basmane, Hilal, Halkapınar, Bornova, and Evka 3.
- Metro
- Payment
- Use İzmirim Kart or Bilet35. The city says cards and tickets can be bought or topped up at central metro stations and the airport rail station.
- İZBAN uses a distance-based/refund pattern, so rail payment can feel different from a simple metro tap.
- Fare card
- Airport
- The metro does not directly serve Adnan Menderes Airport. Use İZBAN for the airport, then transfer at Hilal or Halkapınar if the metro is useful.
- Airport link
- Visitor use
- Useful for longer city movement, especially if your hotel is away from Alsancak/Konak or you are connecting between İZBAN, tram, Basmane, and Bornova.
- M1
Mike’s notes
Izmir is not a metro-first city for a short central stay. The waterfront, Konak, Kemeraltı, and Alsancak are walkable enough that you can forget the system for chunks of the trip. The metro becomes useful when your hotel is further out, when you are linking to İZBAN, or when the city has become too hot for one more long walk.
How I would use it
Think of M1 as the city spine, not the whole network. It links Fahrettin Altay/Narlıdere on the west side with Konak, Basmane, Hilal, Halkapınar, Bornova, and Evka 3. If you are staying near a chain hotel outside the central dining strip, this is the line that may turn that cheaper room into a workable base.
For the airport, use İZBAN. For waterfront movement, the tram can be nicer. For dinner in Alsancak, walking is still the best version if you are already central.
Payment
The city's payment mental model is İzmirim Kart. You can also use Bilet35 paper tickets for a fixed number of trips, but the reusable card is the cleaner version if you are riding more than once.
Do pay attention when you move between systems. The city transport guide describes a different distance/refund pattern for the suburban train, which is why İZBAN can feel less like a normal flat metro ride.
Short history
2000
The metro opens
Izmir opens the first metro section, creating the city rail spine through the core.
2010s
Transfers become the point
Hilal and Halkapınar make the metro more useful because they connect it to the İZBAN regional rail layer.
2024
Narlıdere extension reaches the west side
The line extends west to Narlıdere Kaymakamlık, making the single-line system longer and more useful away from the historic core.
