Mike’s notes

For a visitor, İZBAN is the airport answer in Izmir. Adnan Menderes Airport has a connected rail station, and the train runs into the city with transfers toward metro, tram, and the central waterfront districts.

How I would use it

From ADB, follow the airport signs for the Subway-İZBAN station. If you are staying central, check which stop puts you closest to your hotel: Alsancak, Hilal, Halkapınar, and the metro transfer points can each make sense depending on where you land in the city.

The important distinction is that İZBAN is regional/suburban rail, not the one-line Izmir Metro. It is better for the airport and longer north-south movement. It is not the thing I would use for a short waterfront hop.

Fare behavior

The city transport guide describes a pay-as-you-go suburban train tariff where a longer-distance amount is collected first, then a refund scan returns the unused balance after you exit. That is the detail to remember. If something feels different from a normal metro fare gate, it is because this system is not priced like a simple city metro.

Day-trip layer

İZBAN is also the rail layer to think about when you start looking beyond central Izmir. For Ephesus/Selçuk-style trips, check current service before you build the day around it, because those trips can involve longer regional rail patterns beyond the core city movement.
