The Vientiane to Kunming international train crosses Laos and Yunnan through Vang Vieng, Luang Prabang, Muang Xay, Boten, Mohan, Xishuangbanna, Pu'er, and Yuxi. Four international trains currently run each day, with departures from both Kunming and Kunming South. The full trip takes about 9 hours 30 minutes, including border processing.
International passenger service opened in April 2023. A second daily pair was added in July 2025, which created the present four-train schedule.
Tickets and trains
Buy through LCR Ticket in Laos, China Railway's 12306 channels in China, or a designated international ticket office. Real-name ticketing applies. Carry the passport and visas or entry permissions required for both countries, and arrive early for the Boten and Mohan inspections.
The international services use 160 km/h electric multiple units with air conditioning, power outlets, and announcements in Lao, Chinese, and English. Border procedures require passengers to leave their seats and move through inspection areas. Contact the railway in advance when mobility assistance is required during that process.
