Mike’s notes
Munich's trams are the surface layer that keeps the city from being only U-Bahn plus S-Bahn. They are useful around the center edges, Schwabing, museum districts, and the places where the underground map asks for an annoying transfer.
For a first trip, I would still learn the U-Bahn and S-Bahn first. Then use the tram when it is the obvious direct line above ground.
Payment is the same Munich lesson as always: app ticket or validated paper ticket. No gates does not mean no fare.
