Alicante to Barcelona Euromed

Euromed is Renfe's long-distance service along the Mediterranean side of Spain. The Alicante to Barcelona route links two central stations and passes through the Valencia, Castellón, and Tarragona areas.

The principal station sequence

The route mapped here is Alicante Terminal, València Joaquín Sorolla, Castelló de la Plana, Camp de Tarragona, and Barcelona Sants. This is a corridor map rather than a promise that every departure stops at all five stations. Renfe changes calling patterns between trains, so the live journey result and booked station list control the trip.

Valencia is the major midpoint. Renfe identifies Joaquín Sorolla as its Euromed station for Barcelona and Alicante, but check the station name on the booked train before arranging a local transfer.

At the Barcelona end, Sants Estació is the city's principal long-distance rail hub and connects with Metro lines L3 and L5. At the southern end, Alicante Terminal is in the city center, with Luceros and the coastal TRAM d'Alacant nearby.

The train I rode

The photographs at Alicante Terminal show the Euromed train I rode into the station. I took them after getting off the train. One frame shows the train at the platform, while the second shows it beside other Renfe services.

Euromed uses assigned seating. A Euromed ticket belongs to a named passenger and a specific departure, so it cannot be treated as an open boarding pass for the next train. Fare conditions determine whether a change or refund is allowed.

Long-distance platforms can have luggage screening and boarding control. Arriving with time to find the platform is more useful than treating the departure time as the moment to enter the station.

Use the local connection included with a Euromed ticket

An eligible Euromed ticket includes a Combinado Cercanías code. It can be exchanged for connecting Cercanías or Rodalies travel at participating origin and destination hubs, including Barcelona, Tarragona, Valencia, and Murcia/Alicante.

When Alicante Terminal is the origin or destination, Renfe also permits free travel on Alicante TRAM lines L1, L2, L3, and L4. The current conditions allow use during the three hours before departure from Alicante or the three hours after arrival, subject to the tram's operating hours. Use the five-digit code or barcode from the Renfe ticket and check the current conditions before relying on the connection.

Renfe advises buying in advance for lower fares. Compare the conditions as well as the price, because the cheapest fare has the least flexibility.
