Rotterdam's trams are the surface layer of a city that does not behave like Amsterdam. The streets are wider, the postwar rebuild is obvious, and the tram helps you read that above ground.
Use the metro for the long jumps. Use the tram when the point is a neighborhood approach, a river-side movement, or staying oriented in the city fabric.
