The direct train from Munich to Vienna is useful enough that flying rarely improves the trip. Railjet services connect Munich Hbf with Salzburg, Linz, St. Pölten, Vienna Meidling, and Vienna Hbf in a little over four hours.
Regular international service on this corridor developed from the older Bavarian and Austrian main lines. Railjet began service in 2008 and became the principal premium daytime train.
Book for the exact departure
ÖBB and DB both sell the trip. Discounted Sparschiene and Super Sparpreis tickets are usually tied to the booked train. A seat reservation may be separate, and it is worth adding on weekends, holidays, and summer departures.
Railjet trains are air-conditioned and usually include Economy, First, and Business class, Wi-Fi, power outlets, luggage racks, and a restaurant or bistro. Wheelchair spaces and accessible toilets are available on equipped trains, but the space should be reserved when it is required.
Vienna Meidling can be more convenient than Vienna Hbf for western or southern districts. Check which Vienna stop is printed before staying onboard by habit. Some departures continue beyond Vienna, and the central station stop is not always the best place to leave.
