Direct Railjets run from Vienna Hbf through Bruck an der Mur, Graz, Klagenfurt, Villach, Udine, Treviso, and Venezia Mestre to Venezia Santa Lucia.
Journey time
The 2026 daytime schedule takes about seven hours and ten minutes after the opening of the Koralm Railway.
Night train
A Nightjet also links Vienna and Venice on a longer overnight path. Book a couchette or sleeper when the point is to sleep, not simply to occupy a reclining seat all night.

Mike’s notes

The daytime Railjet runs from Vienna to Venice through Bruck an der Mur, Graz, Klagenfurt, Villach, Tarvisio, Udine, Pordenone, Treviso, and Venezia Mestre. It finishes at Venezia Santa Lucia, so the arrival is in Venice itself rather than at an airport or a mainland bus terminal.

This became a much better daytime route when the Koralm Railway opened in December 2025. The direct train still serves Bruck an der Mur and Graz, then uses the new corridor to reach Klagenfurt in about 41 minutes from Graz. The full Vienna to Venice schedule is now about seven hours and ten minutes.

Day train or Nightjet

The Railjet is the scenic daytime option. The route crosses the Austrian Alps, enters Italy at Tarvisio, and continues across Friuli and Veneto. Trains are air-conditioned and normally provide Economy, First, and Business class, Wi-Fi in Austria, power outlets, luggage space, and food service. Connectivity can become inconsistent near the border and through mountain sections.

The Nightjet is useful when saving a hotel night matters, but it follows a longer overnight route. A couchette or sleeper changes the experience completely. A seat is cheaper, but it is still a seat for an overnight journey.

Reserve early in busy periods

Sparschiene tickets are limited and tied to the selected train. A daytime seat reservation may be separate. Nightjet accommodation is capacity-controlled and can sell out well before summer weekends.

Railjet wheelchair spaces and accessible toilets should be reserved in advance. International assistance involves more than one infrastructure manager, so give ÖBB enough notice to coordinate boarding at the origin and arrival help in Venice.
