Line 1 opened in 1974. The network expanded through conventional metro lines, Line 15’s monorail, and Line 17, which began transitional passenger operation in 2026. The present route opened through those stages.

Current rolling stock and ride conditions: Most lines use conventional electric metro trains. Lines 15 and 17 use elevated monorails, with Line 17 still running restricted transitional hours.
Vila Prudente, Tamanduateí, Chácara Klabin, Ana Rosa, Paraíso are marked as interchanges in the network data. Sé, Paraíso, Ana Rosa, Luz, República, Pinheiros, Santo Amaro, Tamanduateí, and Barra Funda are major transfer stations. Some transfers connect to CPTM rather than another metro line.
