Mike’s notes

Serbia has one modern fast railway and a much larger collection of conventional regional lines. The fast spine runs from Belgrade Centre through Petrovaradin to Subotica. Other trains spread west to Šid and Bar, south to Niš, east through Zaječar, and across Vojvodina and central Serbia on routes where only a few departures may run each day.

Start with the timetable, not the track map

A railway line on the map does not guarantee passenger service. Niš to Dimitrovgrad has no passenger trains in the current timetable because of infrastructure work. Several other physical branches are freight-only or suspended. The line diagrams here follow active passenger trips in the 2025/26 timetable.

Novi Sad needs special attention. The main station remains closed after the 2024 canopy collapse. Trains on the Belgrade and Subotica axis use Petrovaradin, and Srbija Voz provides a free bus connection to Novi Sad. Trains toward Sombor and Karavukovo use Novi Sad Ranžirna.

Tickets and reservations

Domestic tickets are sold online, in the Srbija Voz app, at ticket machines, and at staffed station offices. Online purchase receives a 5 percent discount. A ticket bought onboard carries a 500 RSD fee when the departure station had an office or machine.

SOKO InterCity tickets include a mandatory seat reservation. Reservations are also required for the Bar night train, including separate charges for couchettes, sleepers, and vehicle transport. Online international ticket sales for Montenegro and the Subotica to Szeged route began in July 2026.

Trains and accessibility

The fast line uses Stadler KISS double-deck trains and CRRC Tiger electric sets. Regional electric services can use Stadler FLIRT trains. Unelectrified branches often use class 711 diesel multiple units, a fleet the operator has identified for modernization. Older locomotive-hauled coaches remain on some long-distance trains.

Wheelchair spaces are available only on equipped modern electric and diesel trains. They are limited and need advance arrangement. Platforms, lifts, and staffed assistance vary sharply across the network, so confirm the train and both stations before relying on step-free travel.
