The Tren Expreso Rionegrino, usually shortened to TER, is the 195 km local passenger train between Ingeniero Jacobacci and San Carlos de Bariloche. It boards passengers at Clemente Onelli, Comallo, and Pilcaniyeu. The timetable also shows Perito Moreno and Ñirihuau as passing points, not scheduled boarding stops.
The full railway between Viedma and Bariloche opened in 1934, connecting the settlements of Río Negro's Línea Sur with the provincial capital and the Andes. When the national government withdrew in 1993, Río Negro took responsibility for the railway rather than allowing passenger service to end.
The TER returned on June 2, 2026 after an overhaul in the San Antonio Oeste workshops. Staff rebuilt the Scania diesel engine, worked through the traction and transmission systems, inspected the brakes and safety equipment, and installed new wheel discs. The province expects the new wheels to remain serviceable for 15 to 20 years, subject to wear.
Tuesday and Thursday trains leave Jacobacci at 4:00, reach Bariloche at 8:40, and return at 17:00. The schedule gives residents time for medical appointments, errands, and government services before the return trip. Tickets are sold online and at the terminal stations. This is a reserved fare rather than contactless payment at the platform.
The diesel railcar carries 144 passengers and has heating and air conditioning, an audiovisual system, and a small cafe. The TER permits one bag up to 10 kilograms.
