Tren Laja–Talcahuano

The Tren Laja to Talcahuano links the coast at Mercado de Talcahuano with Concepción, Hualqui, San Rosendo, and Laja. It uses the urban Biotrén corridor first, then continues through the smaller communities along the Biobío.

Between Talcahuano and Hualqui, the stations overlap with Biotrén Line 1. The Laja train is not an extra Biotrén run. It has its own schedule and continues well beyond the metropolitan terminus, with much wider gaps between trains.

Passenger trains used this southern corridor long before Biotrén opened in 1999. San Rosendo became one of the country's main railway junctions. The surviving complex there includes a roundhouse, workshops, coal plant, chimney, and water towers built mainly between 1929 and 1934. It became a National Historic Monument in 2024.

The train is a daily regional public service. Check the official Laja to Talcahuano page for the current departure because disruption south of Hualqui can leave few useful alternatives.

Electronic local payment is used on EFE Sur services, but the accepted card and digital methods are not identical across every Chilean rail system. Confirm the current method before boarding outside a staffed station.

The current three-car trains entered service in 2021 with climate control, Wi-Fi, information screens, cameras, an accessible toilet, and space for passengers with reduced mobility. The ride is set up for regional travel, with more seating than Biotrén but no reserved long-distance classes.

Urban stops have the best lighting, shelter, and connecting transport. Rural platforms can be basic and may sit away from a town center. Passengers requiring level boarding or assistance should arrange it with EFE Sur rather than assuming every halt has staff.
